When scheduling a Mercedes-Benz service visit, you’ll want to check your tires for leaks or tears. Every driver should know how to change a flat tire, especially if they plan to drive long distances. As part of our Mercedes-Benz Service Tips series, here’s everything you need to know about how to change a flat tire.
Get Your Materials Ready
After you’ve safely pulled your vehicle over and put on your hazard lights, you need to get everything ready for changing the tire, including:
- Spare tire
- Lug wrench
- Jack
- Tire wedges
Prep the Car
First, activate the parking brake on your Mercedes-Benz vehicle so it won’t go anywhere. You’ll also want to place wedges behind or in front of at least one of your wheels to stop it from rolling. Finally, if your vehicle has a hubcap covering the lug nuts, you’ll want to remove it first.
Loosen the Bolts
The next step is to loosen your lug nuts so they can be easily removed. Using your lug wrench, turn them counter-clockwise in one half-rotation — but don’t completely loosen them or take them off yet.
Lift the Car
Next, position the jack underneath your vehicle and secure it to a solid part of the frame. Carefully lift the vehicle enough so the tire lifts off the ground by a few inches.
Change the Tire
Once your car is raised, remove all the bolts from the tire and set them aside. Take the flat tire off and replace it with your spare, then, tighten the lug nuts back on by hand, lower the jack and car, and remove your wedges. Use your lug wrench to tighten your lug nuts snugly.
